Basic Information
Asuka is the daugther of an American father and a half-Japanese, half-German mother. She was raised in Germany. Her mother was project leader at NERV's Germany branch and became mentally insane after an Eva-related accident, after which her father remarried. The psychological trauma of all of this on the young Asuka drove her to hide her inner turmoil behind a constant drive to be the best and be superior to all around her. Although her pride gives her great ambition, it eventually leads to unstable romantic interests and endangers her with mental collapse. Jealous that Shinji might be better than her, she constantly teases him throughout the series.
Character History
The only other character besides Shinji (that we know of) who survives Third Impact during the End of Evangelion. The exact nature of her survival is subject to much debate. An Eva pilot "feels" everything an Eva unit does and everything that happens to it, and during the climax to Asuka's massive one-against-nine fight with the production-model Eva's, Eva-02 is impaled through the head, and subsequently eviscerated like carrion; Asuka feels all of this as if it is actually happening to her. This may or may not result in her actual death, but simply trauma. During Third Impact, the AT Fields of all people are disolved and they revert to a superorganism made of an "Ocean of LCL Fluid". Shinji survives because he meets Rei/Lilith and rejects this path, crawling out of the LCL, and then Asuka is there as well. Eva units have their own AT Fields, so one possibility is that she survived Third Impact within the remnants of her control plug cockpit. Another theory is that it isn't the "real" Asuka; during the final scene, Asuka has red eyes, when Rei is the pilot that has red eyes. Some think that Shinji is meeting a gestalt combination of Asuka and Rei created during Third Impact for him. However, the counterargument to this is that Asuka is standing next to an ocean of red LCL fluid, and the red-eye might just be ambient coloring. There was never a definative answer to this.
