Neon Genesis Evangelion is an anime series created by Hideaki Anno about a paramilitary organization named NERV which battles monsters from space called Angels using machines called Evangelions.
The series began as a standard giant robot anime series but slowly shifted into a character drama, particularly analysizing the main character Shinji Ikari. Because of Anno's mental breakdown while writing the series, many of the characters suffer from various emotional disorders like depression and separation anxiety disorder.
The series later spawned three movies, Death and Rebirth were condensed versions of the normal series episodes, recut and edited in such a way to encompass the entire series in both films. The third, entitled The End of Evangelion, was something of an alternative to the final episodes of the series and acts as a replacement for episodes 25 and 26.
