My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic is an animated fantasy comedy that aired on Hub Network for the first four seasons, and began airing on Discovery Family at the start of the fifth season. It is the third show in the My Little Pony series.
The series follows a studious unicorn named Twilight Sparkle as her mentor Princess Celestia guides her to learn about friendship in the town of Ponyville, where she becomes close with five other ponies. Each represent different faces of friendship and Twilight discovers that she herself is a key part of the magical artifacts known as the "Elements of Harmony". The ponies share adventures ad help out other residents of Ponyville, while working out the troublesome moments in their own friendships.
As a result of the qualities, Friendship Is Magic has not only proven a major success in its intended demographics, but has also unexpectedly gained significant followings in peripheral ones, such as teen and adult males. The show has also attracted media coverage for its various fanbases, which spawned numerous adult-themed parodies, mash-ups, and images, which are mostly outside of the show's main target audience. These can be seen on websites such as YouTube and deviantART. Reasons for the unintended appreciation include Faust and her team's creative writing and characterization, the expressive Flash-based animation style, themes that older audiences can appreciate, and a reciprocal relationship between Hasbro, the creators, and the show's fans. Portions of the show have become part of the remix culture, and have formed the basis for a variety of Internet memes. As a result, it became a major commercial success, becoming the most highly rated original production in the Hub Network's broadcast history and leading to new merchandising opportunities for Hasbro, including books, clothing, collectable trading cards, and comics.
