Mr. Show with Bob and David was a sketch comedy show that ran for four years on HBO. Mr. Show combined the pop-culture themes of The Ben Stiller Show and SCTV with the absurdity and social satire of Monty Python's Flying Circus, presented with performances that balanced dramatic angst with broad comedic strokes. Mr. Show was a victim of HBO's heavy emphasis on comedy programming in the mid to late 1990s, fighting for promotion among the critically acclaimed Tracy Takes On and the reviled Arli$$, as well as Emmy winners The Chris Rock Show and Dennis Miller Live. Mr. Show consisted of previously-filmed segments shown alongside live sketches, which mirrored the format of earlier sketch shows such as The Kids in the Hall and Saturday Night Live. Though the show maintained a small, fervent fanbase, in the fourth season its timeslot was moved to Mondays at midnight. Bob and David subsequently decided to end the show after that season.

The first and second seasons featured Mr. Show performer (and David Cross's then-girlfriend) Mary Lynn Rajskub as the announcer. After their relationship ended, seasons three and four featured a random character from a sketch as the announcer for each episode. The end credits of every episode included "special thanks" to an individual completely unrelated to Mr. Show.
