Malcolm in the Middle is centered around a somewhat dysfunctional, but close-knit family. Malcolm, the main character in the show, is a genius. He has always had trouble making 'normal' friends, so he hangs out with the other kids in his accelerated class.

He has four brothers, Francis, the oldest has always been away from home, either at school, or working. Reese, is a year older than Malcolm, he is a bully, and is not too bright. His brother Dewey is a few years younger than Malcolm, and has recently started playing the piano, he is a prodigy or sorts. His youngest brother is Jamie, and is only a couple years old.

Their father, Hal, is a nice guy, and lets his wife Lois control him. Lois is a stern mother, and will let her kids get away with nothing.

Malcolm in the Middle is very much like a traditional sitcom, but it has no laugh track.
