The Orchid

Purpose

The Orchid was constructed by the DHARMA Initiative under the guise of a botanical research facility. However, the Orchid's true purpose was to study a volatile and potentially dangerous field of research regarding a Casimir effect generated by the unique properties of the island. In the orientation film for the station, Dr. Edgar Halliwax held a rabbit stenciled with the number 15. A second, identical rabbit appeared during his speech, alarming Dr. Halliwax who warned the crew not to let the two rabbits near each other and then ordered the camera be turned off.

The Casimir Effect

The Casimir effect is a small attractive force that acts between two close parallel uncharged conducting plates. Its existence was first predicted in 1948 by Hendrick Casimir, a Dutch physicist. The Casimir effect is a phenomenon that provides evidence for the existence of the quantum vacuum — "empty space" at the subatomic level filled with energy, rapid appearance and disappearance of elementary particles, and fluctuations in the fabric of spacetime. The quantum mechanics of the Casimir effect can be used to produce a locally mass-negative region of space-time in order to stabilize a wormhole for faster-than-light travel.

The Station

The station has yet to be revealed outside the orientation film.
