Lizzie McGuire was a popular Disney Channel show that followed the daily life of middle-schooler Lizzie McGuire (Hilary Duff) and her relationships with her parents; her best friends, Miranda and Gordo; her pesky brother, Matt; her nemesis, blonde cheerleader Kate; and her crush, dimwitted Ethan Craft.

Episodes generally revolved around typical preteen dramas: trying to impress a boy, getting dumped, being embarrassed at school. A cartoon version of Lizzie would appear onscreen periodically to reveal Lizzie's inner thoughts. Most episodes had a sidestory featuring Matt, who was always cooking up a crazy scheme with his friends Lanny and Melina.

The show's popularity, and Duff's rising stardom, prompted Disney to follow up the show's finale with a theatrical release, "The Lizzie McGuire Movie," in 2003.
