William Sidney "Sid" Fairgate is a fictional character from the series Knots Landing. He was portrayed by actor Don Murray from the series debut in 1979 until 1981 when his character dies.

Early Life

William Sidney Fairgate was born and raised in Philadelphia. At fourteen years, the Fairgate family welcomes his new baby sister, Abby. Sid marked this as the beginning of a protective love for little sister. Sid liked cars and became a mechanic. He met the beautiful and rich Susan Philby and despite the objections of her family, they married. Sid was a proud man and he did not like the way in which Susan's family scorned the marriage. Moreover, he refused to let Susan ask them for money. They had a girl, Annie. But Susan couldn;t take it anymore and left Sid while taking Annie with her.

Meeting Karen Cooper

Sid then met the lively Karen Cooper. Although he still had feelings with regards to Susan, he asked Karen to marry him when she became pregnant. They married and shortly after Karen had a daughter, Diana. A few times afterwards, Diana fell sick and Karen remained with her through the night. Sid realized that he liked Karen as he had never loved any woman before and they decided to move and settled in Knots Landing in California.

In Knots Landing

Sid and Karen had two other children, Eric and Michael. Then after having saved enough money, he created Knots Landing Motors, a car dealership and a mechanic shop. This gave him an opportunity to work on new types of engines. Sid gave new neighbor Gary Ewing a job in Knots Landing Motors and a promise of vice-president. Karen then became pregnant and they had misgivings about a new baby, but they agreed to work it out. But then Karen had a miscarriage, but Sid stuck by her.

Convicted

One evening, thinking of making a good deed, Sid picked up a hitch-hiker who falsely accused him of assault with intent to commit rape. Sid was free and cleared when it was discovered that it was a extortion scheme set up by the girl.

Abby comes to Town

At the same time, Abby moved in the cul-de-sac and Sid hired her as an accountant in Knots Landing Motors. Although Abby started to cause trouble in the life of everyone, Sid had a blind faith in her and thought she could do no wrong. Karen saw through Abby's manipulations and they did not get along.

A Fatal Deal

With the garage, without Sid's knowledge, Gary and Abby made deals with the Mafia. Gary acknowledged to Sid what was going on, so they went to the F.B.I and collaborated with them to catch the gangsters. After they were put behind bars, the F.B.I protected Sid and Gary until the hearing. A mechanic working for the mob took out the brakes in Sid's car. While Sid and an agent were driving, the car went out of control and fell from a cliff.

Death

Sid was left paralyzed from the accident. On November 19, 1981, Sid asked Karen to sign papers allowing him to undergo life-risking surgery in order to regain the use of his legs. After some argument, Karen very reluctantly agreed to sign. Sid died in the early stages of the operation, leaving Karen a widow with three children. Before he died, he leave Karen a taped farewell message.
