Early Life

Marion Patrick MacKenzie was born and raised in New York. He had a very tough childhood due to he and his sister Megan being constantly abused by their father, Pete MacKenzie. Mack tried to come between her and her father after the death of his mother. Despite this background, Mack was a successful law student.

Law School Days and Anne Winston

In law school, he befriended Gregory Sumner and Phil Harbert. Later on, Mack testified against him in a corruption case and Phil was sent to prison. One day, during their studies, while they were on a train, Mack met the beautiful Anne Winston. Anne's parents had a dim view of their daughter's relationship with a boy not from their community. Also, Mack sent Greg to fetch Anne so they can meet up together. Then he fell in love with Anne, Mack went one day to the Winstons to propose to Anne, but the whole family had moved and that Anne had not even not say goodbye. He heard no more from her. What he did not know was that Anne was pregnant with his daughter, Paige.

Enter Karen Fairgate

Mack became a federal prosecutor and went out with several women. But none were right for him until one day Karen Fairgate arrived in his office asking him to explain the reason why her husband's (Sid Fairgate) killers were let go. As they worked on the case, Mack and Karen fell in love. Their relationship was volatile, punctuated by quarrels and reconciliations, but after they finally put the criminals behind bars, they decided to marry. When their wedding plans got chaotic, they decided to elope to Las Vegas.

The Wolfbridge Case and the Break-up with Karen

Their marriage took place without too many problems until Greg, in the race for the Senate, asked him to take charge of his cime commission. Mack investigated a crime syndicate called Wolfbridge. Having been threatened, Karen asked him to leave to leave it alone but he didn't. On the contrary, he organized the fake death of Gary Ewing to force Wolfbridge out, without telling his wife. Karen, discovering the truth, gave him her wedding ring back for having deceived her and all their friends. Shortly after Karen was accidentally wounded by a gunman paid by Wolfbridge. After she awoke in the hospital, she confessed that she no longer loved him and he moved in with reporter Ben Gibson. Soon after, Karen admitted that she still had feelings for him but refused to reconcile with him because she knew she was dying. But, pushed by Gary she confessed the truth and Karen agreed to make up with Mack. The operation went without any problems and they returned to live together.

The Flirtation with Jill Bennett

Reappointed to the Governor, the latter sent him another prosecutor, a woman named Jill Bennett to work with him. Jill fell in love with him. Although tempted, he refused to take the plunge and was relieved when Jill became interested in Gary

Enter Paige and Anne

Some time later, a beautiful young girl, Paige Matheson, arrived on his doorstep claiming to be his daughter. Paige's mother, Anne, came to Knots Landing not soon after that. She tries to get back with Mack, but he made it clear that he loved Karen. Anne, out of anger, said that Greg was Paige's father and leaves town. This statement was later disproved when he and Paige both admitted to being allergic to cantaloupe, meaning that Mack was Paige's father after all. When his former neighbor, Laura died of cancer, Greg allowed Mack and Karen to adopt his baby daughter Meg.

Becoming a Lawyer

A few months later, Mack had a mid-life crisis and decided to leave his position with the Governor. During a trip to the mountains, he met a Ranger named Paula Vertosick. Again, he resisted temptation and went back to Karen. On his return he decided to become a lawyer.

Mary Robeson

Mack and Karen were shocked when Mary Robeson came to town. She claimed to be the mother of Laura Avery and managed to get visitation rights to see Meg. When Mary was killed, Mack was arrested. Once released from prison, he investigated and discovered that Mary was Laura's aunt and it was her brother Joe who had killed her. Because of this, Karen leaves Mack again and takes Meg to New York to stay with her daughter Diana Fairgate. Mack realizing what he had lost went to New York to apologize and returned with Karen to the cul-de-sac where they lived happily ever after.
