He ran for the office as a Republican and defeated Democrat opponent Linda Haney to win the election on August 2, 2018 by 51,804 votes to Haney's 26,244. He retained his office in the 2022 Knox County mayoral election by defeating Democrat opponent Debbie Helsley on August 4, 2022 by 30,306 votes to Helsley's 24,520
