Plot Overview

On their way to meet the gang at an old haunted cotton mill, Shaggy and Scooby-Doo are pulled over by the police for driving erratically. When the officer asks them to step out of the Mystery Machine, the two attempt to evade arrest by fleeing.

Meanwhile, Harvey can't find a file he was looking for and decides that it would be in his best interests to hire a clerk. Avenger responds negatively, but Harvey assures him that they're partners and no clerk will change that. Harvey decides to hire Peanut, despite the fact that he was "kinda" fired from his last job because he may have been involved in the murder of a supervisor. During his interview with Peanut, he's called to set up an appointment with Fred Jones but doesn't have an opening until the next day, leaving Shaggy and Scooby in a jail cell with three costumed villains.

Fred comes into Birdman's office and hires him to defend Shaggy and Scooby, although Birdman misinterprets their "gang" as a real gang. He also thinks that they're acting "goofy" and aren't acting "real" with him. When he's set straight, he takes the case and attempts to settle with Spyro, but Spyro refuses and they go to trial.

Spyro attempts to discredit Shaggy and Scooby with testamony from the arresting officer who found several empty pizza boxes and "Jamaican Love" incense. He also shows an out of context video of the gang looking "goofy" and "paranoid." Fred asks Birdman if he should have known about that tape, and Birdman responds indignantly, saying that experience separates them from the animals. This is followed with a live-action shot of Birdman and a can of Tab walking on the beach. Velma decides that if they can find the real villain in the mill, that will be proof enough to get Scooby and Shaggy acquitted. They catch the "monster" and everything works out, including Scrappy Doo being preyed upon by Avenger.

Trivia

The Show

  • First Appearance: This episode marks the first appearance of Peanut, a redesign of Birdboy from the original Birdman series.

Behind the Scenes

Allusions and References

  • Scooby-Doo: The characters in this episode all come from Scooby-Doo, Where Are You!, a popular Saturday morning cartoon about a group of youths who solve mysteries in creepy locales. The series has often been the butt of jokes about marijuana use because Shaggy and Scooby exhibit typical "stoner" tendencies, including bizarre eating habits and paranoia.
  • Tab Cola: The can of soda in Harvey's "product placement" daydream is Tab Cola, one of the first diet colas produced for mass-market consumption in 1963. Its popularity declined severely since its creation and relies mainly on a small cult fan base. It is mainly found in the northeastern United States, where it is sold in both 2-liter bottles and 12-ounce cans.
