Game of Thrones is a fantasy drama adapted from the George R. R. Martin series of novels A Song of Ice and Fire. Rights for the novel were purchased by HBO in January 2007 with David Benioff and D.B. Weiss heading up the production as producers and writers. Additionally, Martin is expected to write one episode per season, likely the premiere or finale.

Benioff and Weiss expect that each season will comprise a single book in the series, of which there are seven (only four have been finished with a fifth mostly written). The first draft of the pilot script was completed by August 2007 and a script was accepted in November 2007. Once the script was accepted, the pilot moved into the budgeting stage and was expected to be shot in Europe or New Zealand in 2008. The series has not been officially greenlit by HBO, however, and production was slowed by the Writers Guild strike. Production is still moving forward on the pilot with Tom McCarthy attached as a director and casting underway. Filming is scheduled to begin in October in Ireland.
