Plot Overview

At the Planet Express office, Fry and Leela learn that Bender likes to cook. Needing a job to justify his employment in the company, Bender becomes the chef. Professor Farnsworth gives the crew a mission to the Forbidden Zone. On the way Bender makes his first meal which turns out to be too salty. Once there Leela gives Fry a hard time about not horsing around while he's delivering the package.

Fry gets incredibly hot on his walk to the palace because of the three suns. He arrives and finds a bottle of water which he drinks. He accidentally drinks the former emperor and so becomes emperor himself. Later, Leela scolds Fry on his carelessness. They get into an argument where Fry tells Leela to stop helping him. Fry delivers his coronation speech with success, but the changing of the suns reveals that the former emperor is in Fry's stomach. They are forced to lock themselves in the palace because the beings attempt to open up Fry to let out the emperor. Amy comes up with the idea for Fry to cry out the emperor but he has trouble getting emotional. Bender calls Leela who comes to help. Her and Fry make up for their fight and Leela starts beating on Fry causing him to cry out the emperor.

Trivia

The Show

  • Opening Caption: Presented in Doublevision (Where Drunk)
  • First Appearance: This episode marks the first appearance of Elzar, a Neptunian chef modelled after Emeril Lagassee. Also first appearing in this episode is Florp, a popular comedian on the planet.

Behind the Scenes

  • Network Notes: FOX Standards & Practices hated the crack vending machine joke, but the writers managed to keep it in.
  • Scheduling: Originally, this episode was going to be the second episode aired because the idea of Fry accidentally becoming the leader of a planet was one of Matt Groening's earliest ideas. However, they decided that it may be better to air more down to Earth epiosdes. Technically, this was actually the first story conceived for the show.
  • Sound Effect Choice: The sound effect used for the Planet Express's landing is the airbrake for a bus.
  • First Draft: Originally when Leela pulled out the book that has the oath Fry had to recite in it, she pulled it out of her pocket. But they decided that it was a little too ridiculous.

Allusions and References

  • Car Wash: The song that Bender sings at the beginning of the episode is Car Wash by Jim Croce. The song first appeared in the 1976 movie of the same name about the employees of a Los Angeles car wash.
Bender: Goin' through the robot wash! Bot wash, yeah!
  • To Serve Man: Bender's apron says To Serve Man on it. To Serve Man was the key phrase of the Twilight Zone episode of the same name about the coming of space aliens to Earth. The phrase is important to the episode because of its double-meaning, in that it could mean to serve man as in to work for humankind or to serve humans as food.

Memorable Moments

Quotes

  • Farnsworth: Good news, everyone--
Bender: Uh-oh, I don't like the sound of that.
Farnsworth: You'll be making a delivery to the planet Trisol...
    Bender: Here it comes.
Farnsworth: A mysterious world in the darkest depths of the Forbidden Zone.
    Bender: Thank you, and goodnight.
Leela: Uh, Professor, are we even allowed in the Forbidden Zone?
Farnsworth: Why, of course! It's just a name! Like the Death Zone or the Zone of No Return. All the zones have names like that in the Galaxy of Terror!
