- Leela's true homeworld is finally revealed: Earth. Leela is actually not a space alien, but the least mutated sewer-mutant ever born. Soon after her birth, her parents realized that she would have the chance for a happy life without the stigma of being a mutant if they left her on the doorstep of an orphanage on the surface with a not written in Alienese; everyone assumed she was an alien-baby, and was raised never knowing she was a mutant. (Many of the sewer mutants (who are from originally human stock) are horrifically deformed, with tentacles, scales, gills, arms growing out of their heads, etc.; relatively speaking apart from her softball-sized cyclops eye Leela is the least-mutated sewer mutant ever).
- Leela's parents are introduced; they live in their house in the sewers/ruins of Old New York underneath the city. They will make several return appearances in the last two seasons of the series.
