Essentially the heart and soul of Serenity's crew, young mechanic Kaylee Frye was hired to replace original mechanic Bester, who turned out to be more or less incompetent, especially when compared to Kaylee.
Mal has been known to speculate that there isn't a power in the 'verse that can stop Kaylee from being cheerful, which is generally true excepting when Simon Tam (whom she has a more-than-platonic interest in) accidentally insults her, which happens on a fairly regular basis.
