Behind the Scenes
- Despite the title the Fourth Doctor does not interact with the other four Doctors. This is because Tom Baker chose not to reprise his role as the Fourth Doctor, as he felt it was too soon after his departure (a decision he later said to regret). It was then decided to incorporate footage from the then-unfinished story Shada of Baker and Lalla Ward.
- This marks the only appearance of Richard Hurndall as the First Doctor. Originally, the idea was also to incorporate old of William Hartnell before deciding to hire Hurndall.

- Tegan: You mean you're deliberately choosing to go on the run from your own people in a rackety old TARDIS?
- The Doctor: Why not? After all, that's how it all started.
