Code Geass, also known with the subtitle of Lelouch of the Rebellion, is a science fiction anime series originally broadcast terrestrially in Japan on MBS. It was later broadcast on the Animax satellite network on November 7, 2006. The series was licensed by Bandai Entertainment for English dubbing and release on Adult Swim in Spring 2008.
The series comes from members of the same team involved in the production of Planetes, also produced by Sunrise. Additionally, the characters were designed by CLAMP, a noted all-female mangaka group. The series is set in 2010, after the Japanese have been invaded and conquered by the Holy Empire of Britannia. After being conquered the Japanese people, now dubbed "Elevens," have been forced into ghettos while their rulers live in first class settlements.
The crux of the series revolves around Lelouch Lamperouge, a member of the royal family who lost his status when his mother, the Queen, was assassinated and his sister crippled. Now entrusted with the power of Geass, he seeks to avenge his mother's death and seek peace by destroying the empire which rules Japan.
A sequel to the series, titled Code Geass: Lelouch of the Rebellion R2, premiered in Japan on April 6, 2008.
