Plot Overview
After a few months absence, Annabeth returns to the D.A.'s office to find a few new colleagues. Her boss and supporter Steve Sharpe has resigned, and in his place is slick New York transplant Jimmy Conlon, who brought his own investigator, Blackwell, along with him, and Ed Williams is a detective now working full-time in the prosecutor's office. She's immediately thrusted into a case in which four members of a family and their neighbor are killed in what initially looks like a home invasion gone wrong. The team soon discovers that the father, who was presumed killed overseas while serving in the Army, is really alive and facing charges in Georgia that he molested his two daughters. Believing that he somehow engineered the hit on his own family, Conlon uses trickery to get him to come to Indiana, where he can be tried for murder. As the case goes on, it goes from being a home invasion gone wrong to a kidnapping gone wrong to cold-blooded murder, and everyone's surprised as to just who actually ordered the murders. Annabeth and Maureen soon discover that Conlon has his own somewhat unethical ways of doing things, and even borrow a page from his book to get crucial information.
