Biography
Chris Roland is a film and TV producer, director and writer born in Santa Monica, California, and now resides in Cape Town, South Africa. Chris is considered one of South Africa's top producers with an enviable track record for professionalism and creative excellence. His more recent focus on directing has gained accolades from piers and audiences alike. Projects Chris has been involved in have won or been nominated for Oscar, Genie, Golden Globe, SAFTA and DGA, and include 1968 Tunnel Rats , Attack on Darfur, Our House, Charlie Jade, Hotel Rwanda, Stander, Lexx and Man to Man. Chris has produced dozens of commercials, including Pepsi, Molson Beer, Met Life, and Texaco, and has produced and directed dozens of non-fiction TV programs.
Chris' current projects include the soft-scripted TV drama The Shores, which Chris was producer/showrunner and directed 10 episodes. The series wrapped in Cape Town on March 16, 2011, and a second season is in the works. Chris is also writing/developing the feature film Political Race and the TV series Hatari Dawn. Chris is the founder of ZenHQ FILMS, a film and TV production and sales company based in Cape Town and co-owned with his wife and documentary filmmaker Lee-Ann Cotton. From 1997 - 2006 Chris previously owned a group of film and TV companies consisting The Imaginarium (development and production), South African Film Finance Corporation (international financing and coproduction structures), and Basecamp Logisitics (equipment rentals).
Chris is currently Chairman of the Board for the Mylife Foundation, a Cape Town charity aimed at bettering the lives of street kids and at risk youth. He is the co-founder of the Dr. Lionel Ngakane Film School Scholarship fund administered by the National Film and Video Foundation, and includes training programs on most of his productions. Chris provides consulting services world-wide to the film and TV industry, and leads workshops on a variety of industry related topics. Chris is an adventurer and has travelled in over 45 countries, is a licensed race car driver, multi-engine rated pilot, mountaineering instructor, skydiver and scuba diver. He has been described as a person who loves life and lives it to it's fullest.
