[edit] Plot Overview

Sam Malone is a former Red Sox pitcher and current ladies' man running a blue-collar Boston bar. In walks Sumner Sloane, a college professor, with his teaching assistant/fiancée, Diane Chambers. They've stopped in the bar before leaving on a trip during which they'll get married, but Sumner wants to pick up his wedding ring from his ex-wife. So he leaves to fetch the ring, leaving his beautiful, intelligent, but snobby fiancée completely out of place in the care of the bartender.

Sam begins to hit on Diane, but she resists his advances... but as time goes on, Sam becomes convinced that Sumner isn't coming back. Diane decides to prove Sam wrong by calling up the airline, only to discover that Mr. and Mrs. Sloane have already boarded. Newly single, and, since Sumner was also her boss, newly unemployed, Diane feels lost. Sam offers her a job as a waitress. Hating the idea, but unqualified to do anything else, Diane accepts.
