CBS Cartoon Theater
A year earlier, CBS had bought the Terrytoons studio and its cartoon library from Paul Terry and set about establishing shows culled from that library. In an attempt to mimic the success of ABC's The Wonderful World of Disney, CBS Cartoon Theater showcased Terrytoons films with live action segments hosted by Dick Van Dyke. In these host segments and bridges, Van Dyke would interact with cartoon characters like Heckle and Jeckle, the Terry Bears, Gandy Goose, Sourpuss, Dinky Duck and Little Roquefort.
Viewers weren't fooled. They knew the difference between the lavish Disney films and the cheese-paring Terrytoons films. CBS couldn't even sell time spots to advertisers for the show, so it was filled out with promos and PSAs from Mr. Van Dyke. After 13 weeks, CBS Cartoon Theater was canceled. But it would soon spawn off The Heckle and Jeckle Cartoon Show.
