CBRT-DT is a Canadian local station in Calgary, Alberta, owned by the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation and affiliated with CBC Television. It broadcasts on digital channel 21, displaying on tuners as virtual channel 9.
History
CBRT signed on for the first time on September 1, 1975 at 6 p.m., taking the Calgary CBC affiliation from previous affiliate CFAC-TV, which thereafter became independent. Its initial branding alternated between CBC 9 (making CBRT one of the first TV stations in North America to use network-channel number branding) and CBC Calgary, then switched to using the station's call sign before returning to using CBC 9 in 1982. In line with other CBC-owned stations in Canada, CBRT has used the generic CBC Television network branding since 2002.
On August 31, 2011, as part of the transition of Canadian television broadcasting from analog to digital, CBRT's channel 9 analog signal went off the air while CBRT-DT's digital signal signed on at channel 21. All of CBRT's analog rebroadcasters shut down on July 31, 2012 as part of the overall shutdown of all CBC-owned analog retransmitters due to budget cuts, resulting in CBRT becoming available on cable and satellite only in southern Alberta outside of Calgary. In the spring of 2015, when CBC Television began using regional branding for its owned-and-operated stations again, CBRT returned to using its old on-air brand of CBC Calgary.
Local programs on CBRT are limited to the supper-hour newscast CBC Calgary News, anchored by Rob Brown, CBC Calgary News Late Night, a half-hour late update, CBC Alberta News Late Night, a provincial weekend late news update anchored by Alicia Asquith (seen on both CBRT and CBXT in Edmonton), and a TV simulcast of the first hour of Calgary Eyeopener, a morning show aired on Calgary CBC Radio One station CBR. A production centre for CBC News Network is also located at the CBRT studios.
