Basic Information
Smart, sassy, well-connected and with expensive tastes, Phylida (or Phyl) Oswyn, and her partner-in-crime Bev Tull - the "Costa Cons" - are extravagant con artists.
They arrive at Larkhall with a giant trunk filled with fruit, painting equipment, prescription medicines and alcohol. They manage to smuggle large chunks of it through, and spend a large amount of their time drunk. In one of their scams, Phyl seduces the delivery man from the local baker's into giving them extra cakes each week, which they get Tina O'Kane to cover for them while they trade with another inmate for alcohol stolen from the officer's club. They then give Tina a tiny amount of alcohol back and keep a large amount for themselves.
Phyl and Bev also scam Denny Blood in a psychic reading, producing "spirit paintings" of Denny's deceased lover, Shaz Wyllie. Later they do the same to Sylvia Hollamby, extracting bottles of gin and tonic out of her in return for a psychic reading about Bobby, her late husband, and assurances that she'll meet a new man soon.
When Phyl is sexually touched by the bakery delivery man, she knocks him out cold and steals his van. Phyl and Bev use this to escape with Tina in the back. They leave Tina tied up, to be discovered by police. They travel out to Spain and convince a friendly waiter to put them up in an unused suite in the hotel which belongs to a Russian gangster. In the safe, they find a bag of diamonds and a handgun. In the next room, honeymoon couple Sylvia and prison doctor, Malcolm Nicholson end up staying. After Nicholson learns that Sylvia has not actually got the inheritance, he becomes enraged and ties Sylvia down to a chair and prepares an injection of drugs to kill her and make it look natural. Just before Nicholson puts the needle in, Phyl and Bev appear on the balcony holding the gun. Phyl shoots him and frees Sylvia. Sylvia returns the favour to them by providing them both with alcohol back in prison.
Phyl goes on the run, escaping on a motorbike. Eventually, she stops for a drink and starts getting off with the barman. He turns her in, and she is shipped back to Larkhall.
