The King of Omashu is the fifth episode of the first season of Avatar: The Last Airbender, and the fifth episode overall. Aang and friends travel to the Earth Kingdom city of Omashu, where they are at the mercy of its crazy king.

Plot Overview

Aang and friends arrive at the Earth Kingdom city of Omashu under a false identity. They are soon arrested for recklessly riding the mail carts and brought in front of an eccentric old man with a peculiar sense of humor. The old man, who turns out to be the king, promises our heroes will freed if Aang can perform three challenges for him. After Aang succeeds in his trials, Aang realizes that the king is Bumi, who is a good friend of Aang's from a hundred years ago. Bumi and Aang ride the mail carts one last time before the kids depart Omashu.

Characters

• Bumi: A friend of Aang's from long ago, he is the king of Omashu. He is a strong Earthbender and his eccentric ways often confuse and frustrate his subjects.
• Aang: He learns that he must think differently and consider all the possibilities in order to fulfill his role as the Avatar.
• Cabbage Merchant: His first appearance. He is trying to bring his cabbages into Omashu, but the guards at the gate destroy his cart.
