Subject Profile
Ryan Hickmott, 24, is a God-fearing, conservative American from rural Michigan. He was co-captain of his high school football team, joined the military to put himself through college, and was the youth minister of his church. Ryan's values as an American are firmly rooted in three essential beliefs: God, country, and family. Today, Ryan believes that these principles are under attack and homosexuality is partially to blame. The Bible condemns it, the military is disrupted by it, and even the definition of family is being threatened by the prospect of gay marriage. For 30 Days, in an effort to gain some perspective on his own firmly rooted beliefs, he will live with a gay roommate named Ed Coller in San Francisco, a city whose pulse beats to the rhythm of its thriving gay community.
Ed Coller is a 38-year old gay marketing executive that lives just a few blocks from San Francisco's Castro District. Born and raised in San Luis Obisbo, Ed was brought up in an accepting and loving family whose humor and scholarly pursuits were filled with skepticism, liberalism and agnosticism. When he first announced his homosexuality to his parrents, Ed was accepted with impunity.
Ed is fiercely proud of San Francisco for its beauty and openness. He lives in the "gayest section of the gayest city in the world" and loves every minute of it. He is quite social, attending parties, going to dinners, and visiting bars all over the Castro district. Widely referred to as the unofficial Mayor of the Castro District, he has many good friends and a myriad of acquaintances.
