Wheelie and the Chopper Bunch was an animated comedy airing Saturday mornings on NBC.
Thirty-four years before Disney/Pixar's movie Cars came this series in a city completely populated by motorized vehicles. Wheelie was a little red Volkswagen Beetle, stunt car racer, whose girlfriend was Rota Ree, a convertible whose windshield resembles a hairbow. They had to deal with the Chopper Bunch, a quartet of bumbling motorcycle bullies. Chopper was the leader, Hi-Rise was a non-descript dunce, Revs was an addled cycle speaking in spoonerisms, and Scrambles would always whine "I told ya!" whenever a Chopper Bunch plan went wrong (to which Chopper would reply along the lines of "Aw, button your crankcase!")
Wheelie had no voice; he communicated simply by beeping his horn. Noted comic book artist John Byrne (Marvel's The Uncanny X-Men) drew some early Wheelie stories for Charlton Comics in 1975.
