Waterloo Road is a drama set in an ailing comprehensive school in Northern England where most teachers have long given up trying to make a difference. When the headmaster suffers a nervous breakdown, Jack Rimmer reluctantly moves into the position and recruits ambitious and optimistic Andrew Treneman from a private school as his deputy head. Along with guidance head Kim Campbell, they set out to turn around the sinking ship, despite deep differences over the best course of action. Meanwhile, some of the staff face excruciating problems of their own, such as Tom Clarkson, who is about to marry his girlfriend and fellow teacher Lorna Dickey, but really is no longer in love with her and instead has fallen for Izzie Redpath, another fellow teacher and Lorna's best friend.
