WPXH is an Ion affiliate serving the Birmingham, Alabama market and is licensed to the city of Hoover, south of Birmingham. It broadcasts currently on digital RF 33 and is mapped to its original analog channel designation, 44.

Channel 44, then licensed to the city of Gadsden AL (east of Birmingham), first signed on in 1986 as independent WNAL, a satellite of Tuscaloosa station WDBB/channel 17 (Bessemer city of license) which was to the southwest of Birmingham. Later that year, WDBB became a charter Fox affiliate with WNAL supplying the feed to east Alabama. In 1996, WNAL became a CBS affiliate with the WB as secondary after WDBB lost Fox to then-ABC affiliate WBRC/channel 6. ABC would later become a cluster billed as "ABC 33/40" (which originates from WBMA-LD/channel 58 and is relayed to three other stations' subchannels). Once Birmingham CBS affiliate WBMG (now WIAT)/channel 42 increased their power and coverage through north central Alabama, WNAL was bought by Paxson Communications, recalled as WPXH and made into a Pax affiliate.

WPXH has changed its city of license to Hoover, which is in the south metro area of Birmingham. They moved their digital broadcasts from RF 45 to RF 33. Ion Media is now a subsidiary of E.W. Scripps, which having purchased Ion divested a number of stations to Salt Lake City-based INYO Broadcasting to meet ownership cap issues. WPXH was among those stations sold to INYO.
