The term very special episode originated as a marketing term for an episode of a normally light-hearted program (like a sitcom) that tackled a serious issue. Common themes include eating disorders, sexual abuse, dealing with death, underage drinking, premarital sex, drinking and driving, issues with sexual orientation, and drug use.

The term is now used mostly to mock programs for poorly handling difficult social issues.
