Veronica Mars/Lynn Echolls Suicide
Lynn Echolls was the wife of Aaron Echolls a famous movie star. While Aaron put on a pretty face for the media, behind the scenes he was abusive, often letting his rage boil over into abuse of his son Logan Echolls. In addition Aaron was not a faithful husband; his mistresses were plentiful in Neptune. All of this eventually led to Lynn Echolls commiting suicide by jumping over a bridge. Logan, her son, did not show signs of grief following her suicide despite being very close to her, and we would later find out that this is because he thought she had faked her death. Logan would turn to his adversary, Veronica Mars, to help him find out what really happened to his mother.
Evidence Lynn committed suicide
- After Aaron was stabbed by an obsessed former lover he and Lynn got into an argument over a possible divorce. The argument is so heated that Logan even threatens to kill his father. Lynn storms off claiming that she can not take this anymore, gets into her car and takes some pills before driving to the bridge. This seems to suggest that Lynn was in a state of anger as well as being drugged when her suicide supposedly occurred. (1x12)
- Lynn often took painkillers and more than likely did not reach a drugged state when taking them.
- When storming off from the argument, Lynn looks more angry than she does depressed. She does not look like a person who wants to end her own life (if anything she looks like she wants to end Aaron's life).
- A freshman named Hart caught on video what appears to be a person falling from the bridge at 4:37 PM, the time that Lynn supposedly jumped. (1x14)
- Veronica learned about this video footage through Weevil, who had heard a rumor about a freshman who was going to get rich but selling a video of Lynn jumping. In addition the freshman (Hart) came across the evidence while editing a homemade movie he and his friends had shot. It's possible, however unlikely, that Hart tampered with the footage in order to try and make money by selling the video.
- No other cameras captured the jump.
- It's unlikely that many people would be filming that part of the bridge at the same time as the jump.
Evidence Lynn faked her death
- No body was ever recovered from the river. (1x13)
- The river in which Lynn jumped is likely very deep. It's common for bodies of jumpers to remain missing.
- Lynn's father bought a lighter in Seoul during the Korean war. After escaping capture he had the phrase "Free at Last" engraved on the lighter. Lynn kept this lighter with her always. Except the night she disappeared, then it was left on her dresser. Logan sees this as a sign, that his mother is leaving a message to him telling him that she is all right. (1x13)
- It could just as easily be a goodbye.
- A woman, Sandra Bolan, claimed to have seen Lynn get out of a car and get into a van with a mysterious stranger. (1x14)
- Logan found out about this woman by seeing her story in a tabloid magazine.
- Veronica interviews Ms. Bolan pretending to be a reporter. Ms. Bolan acts like an obsessed fan, and seems more preoccupied with the celebrity of the Echolls than with what she reportedly saw. Also, she keeps a scrap book of pictures from each time she sees one of Aaron Echolls movies.
- Logan overhears the interview and walks off angry.
Current state
After it was revealed in Mars vs. Mars that there was a timestamped video of a person falling from the bridge the Lynn Echolls storyline was no longer pursued in season 1. It is likely that the show writers consider this mystery to be solved, but from the episodes which followed in season 1 we are able to see just how controlling and abusive Aaron Echolls could be, giving more credence to the idea that Lynn would want to find a way out of their relationship. So while this particularly mystery might have been solved, or at the very least put on hold, we know that in the world of Veronica Mars anything can reappear when you least expect it.
