Plot Overview

As Beta leads the horde on route to the communities, Eugene, Ezekiel, and Yumiko wonder if they can trust Princess.

Notes

Arc Advancement

Happenings

  • Beta herds the horde through the communities, only to find they've been abandoned. They've relocated to an empty hospital building they've taken to calling the tower and Beta eventually susses out their location.
  • Princess scares away the group's horses and leads them to a collection of bicycles to continue their trek. They ask for her to come along, which she agrees.
  • Judith tells Daryl that she talked with Michonne and is going to help some people, but she doesn't mentioned that Rick survived the explosion and Michonne went to try to find him.

Characters

  • The person Eugene, Ezekiel, and Yumiko encounter is named Juanita Sanchez, but goes by Princess because she doesn't like her real name. She hasn't seen a living person in a year and tries to befriend the three, only to wind up endangering them. She admits that she feared someone once telling her that she was difficult to love would have been proven right.
  • Beta, as one Whisperer puts it, has "lost it" and has taken to hearing voices.
  • Aaron and Alden keep watch on the horde to keep the tower apprised. However, they lose contact as the horde heads in that direction and are captured by Whisperers.
  • Negan helps Lydia cope with her mother's death by encouraging her to lash out at him, revealing that she hated her, but seems to be unable to do that now.

Referbacks

  • Judith reveals that she talked with Michonne after the fire at Hilltop (What We Become).

Trivia

The Show

  • Samantha Morton's name has been removed from the title sequence as of this episode.
  • Due to 10x16 being postponed, this episode was referred to in some listings as the season finale.

Behind the Scenes

Allusions and References

Memorable Moments

  • After Juanita reveals that she goes by "Princess" because "Queen" makes her sound old and pretentious, Ezekiel introduces himself... and stops himself from calling himself King Ezekiel.
  • As Princess is asked to give up her gun, she states that she doesn't entirely trust the group, either, calculating that she could take out one, maybe two, but that "he'd still be left to kill me," as she motions toward Eugene, much to his bewilderment.

Quotes

  • Daryl: What is it?
Judith: I can't believe we just left her. In a ditch. What if you were lost... and no one could find you? Or R.J. was. Or mom.
Daryl: You gotta tell me where this is coming from.
Judith: I just want us to be back together again. At home. That's all.
Daryl: I radioed your mom so she knows not to go home, so she's safe. And that way, she can find us.
Judith: You talked to her?
Daryl: No. But I'm gonna keep trying.
Judith: It doesn't matter. I talked to her after the fire. And I'm worried... maybe she won't come home.
Daryl: What'd she say?
Judith: She went to go help some people she met. Who needed her. I didn't want to tell you.
Daryl: Why's that?
Judith: Because maybe you'd leave, too.
Daryl: No I won't.
Judith: You promise?
Daryl: I can't.
Judith: Why?
Daryl: Because I can't lie to you. I don't know what's gonna happen. And there ain't no one that can tell you that they do. And there's one thing I know. There's a whole bunch of people back there that'd do anything for you. And one day, when you're older, they're gonna need you to do anything for them. You got a whole lot of family. Nothing can take the place of someone you love being gone, but that doesn't mean that everything that follows is gonna break your heart.
