The TV IV:Proposals/Site Name/Logo

From The TV IV
Jump to: navigation, search
This issue has been resolved: We will be using "The TV IV" as the name, and "tviv.org" will be the primary domain. We hope to have "tviv.com" as a secondary. A contest will be held to generate a new logo that best demonstrates the theme of the name.
If you believe it should be reopened, post a comment on the talk page
We are starting to recognize that our name and logo may be confusing to anyone from outside of Something Awful. We also need to recognize that an SA affiliation may scare many people away. We should think about changing the name and/or logo. Something with a catchy (and available) domain name would be nice.

Options

  1. Leave things the way they are.
  2. Retain name and domain, but change logo and possibly get new domains.
    1. tviv.com, etc.
    2. thetviv.com, etc.
    3. tvivwiki.com, etc.
  3. Change the site name and logo.
    1. TV Stuff (tvstuff.org)
    2. The TV DB (thetvdb.com)
    3. TVpedia (tvpedia.org)

Comments

  1. I don't think we should change the name. Regardless of the fact that it's "gone public" now, it's still, at its heart, a goon project and it still started in the TV IV forum. The logo, maybe, although I like the logo too. I don't know, I just don't see it as all that big a deal. --Hawkman 08:51, 13 Sep 2005 (EDT)
Put an IV drip in there...then maybe some who don't follow SA (like myself) will understand what the name means. Dori 09:20, 13 Sep 2005 (EDT)
  2. I have to admit that I neither got the "IV" in the name at first nor do I get the logo. I guess I had a sneeking suspicion IV came from "IV-line" in the medical sense... But then I have no clue what SA is.... Anyway, about suggestions for a new name...off the top of my head? TViki? TVViki? Ok, maybe it's lame but at least tviki.info still seems to be free.--Skye 09:44, 13 Sep 2005 (EDT)
  3. I didn't get the name at first either, however I do think it's good. And the domain is nice and short - a luxury nowadays. Maybe a subtitle like "Television Intravenous" would help? --RoToRa 10:09, 13 Sep 2005 (EDT)
  4. Perhaps it should be named something other than "TV"-something, to make the scope even broader (eg, movies, video games, etc, a la IMDB.com)? Sure, TV is a good place to start, by why stop there? - Sik0fewl 14:08, 13 Sep 2005 (EDT)
    1. I think we should stick to TV. Trying to be all things to all people is just asking for trouble. There will be plenty of work to do covering TV alone. --CygnusTM 14:16, 13 Sep 2005 (EDT)
    2. Agreed. Lets tackle every TV show known to man, then we can go from there. :-) --Randall 14:27, 13 Sep 2005 (EDT)
      1. But that will take forever.. Okay, I see your point :-). But, assuming we ever do tackle every TV show known to man, having "TV" in the title will feel really restricting :-) - Sik0fewl 14:32, 13 Sep 2005 (EDT)
      2. No, it won't, because you're right- it will take "forever". There will always be more to do, unless TV ceases to exist as a delivery system for video content. ––aenematron 14:42, 13 Sep 2005 (EDT)
  5. We need to come up with some specific option, and then conduct a vote. See above. --CygnusTM 16:00, 13 Sep 2005 (EDT)
  6. When a name is decided I would hope that all .com/.net/.org's can be snatched up. ".orgs" and ".infos" look bad when you don't own the .com --Fayed 19:31, 13 Sep 2005 (EDT)
  7. The logo should be changed whether the name is changed or not. DCEdwards1966 02:28, 14 Sep 2005 (EDT)
  8. How about "WikiTV"? The domains wikitv.tv, wikitv.info and wikitv.biz are all available.. - rae 14:04, 14 Sep 2005 (EDT)
  9. I think a .com would be nicer, but that's just an opinion of someone who's never been to SA anyway. --Semifamous 01:17, 15 Sep 2005 (EDT)
  10. I really like tvpedia.org .... --Skye 08:15, 15 Sep 2005 (EDT)
  11. If we choose to get a new name: I can get pretty good deals on all kinds of domain names, so if you want me to I could register one or two for you as a kind of donation. Also, what do you think of "televerse.info"? (Note the clever television/universe pun!) --Error 12:39, 15 Sep 2005 (EDT)
    1. Ideally, it should be a .com with the .org and .net also available. I'd like to get away from the fringe TLDs. --CygnusTM 13:54, 15 Sep 2005 (EDT)
      1. I think a Wiki is one of the few types of websites where an info TLD actually makes sense. Anyway, it was just an idea, if we decide on something else I'd still be glad to register it. --Error 05:56, 16 Sep 2005 (EDT)
  12. tvtome2.com currently points to this site. --Fayed 21:46, 15 Sep 2005 (EDT)
    1. While I like the domain as a redirection I don't think it would be a good idea to call this project "TV Tome 2" - although TV Tome has been renamed they probably still have the rights to the old name. --Error 05:56, 16 Sep 2005 (EDT)
  13. Like others, I thought it might've been tv 4 at first, but now it makes sense and I kinda like it. Ditto the suggestion of a subtitle. Otherwise, I like thetvdb.com and tvpedia.org... not so big on tvstuff --Gma 06:07, 16 Sep 2005 (EDT)
  14. I kind of like the name The TV DB short for "The TV Database", that way nobody is like... TV 4? TV Eye Vee? WTF does that mean? tvdb would be self explanitory is all I'm trying to say. I'm also currently working on a logo, which I will post this weekend. We should have a logo contest or something. --Randall 09:28, 16 Sep 2005 (EDT)
  15. I personally like tvpedia[.org/.com] best of the current ideas. Due to the similarity to wikipedia, people might remember it easier (they might think it's the same site though, which may or may not be desirable). --Kerecsen 09:53, 16 Sep 2005 (MST)
    1. Unfortunately, tvpedia.com isn't available. --CygnusTM 13:14, 16 Sep 2005 (EDT)
  16. What about "wiki.tv"? --Watson 11:14, 17 Sep 2005 (EDT)
    1. Looks like its already taken. --Fayed 21:30, 17 Sep 2005 (EDT)
  17. I'd definitely vote for TVpedia.org - I love the sound. It has a great ring to it and it makes it seem up in the "big league" of those Wikis like Wikipedia. --LoganK 21:40, 18 Sep 2005 (EDT)
  18. Sorry, but I hate "tvpedia". TV IV, in Brasilian Portuguese slang, translates as "TV na veia", a very "youngish" way of saying "everything about TV"... I really like it. But we deserve a better logo IMHO. --Massa 18:16, 19 Sep 2005 (EDT)
  19. TVIV is fine to me, TVIV.com, TVIV.org, whatever. I have no idea what made you all think to register a .info domain though, I don't know of any sites that use those. I wouldn't want it as the main domain until those are more well known. --MateoP 18:25, 19 Sep 2005 (EDT)
    1. When the domain was purchased, we had no plans if using this outside of Something Awful. There are at least 3 other SA related sites that are .info, so we wanted to fit in. --CygnusTM 20:36, 19 Sep 2005 (EDT)
  20. I'm a fan of the name 'TVIV' but a bit of a recognizable logo would go a long way to making it understandable. Something like an medical IV bottle and tube leading into a television would do wonders. I'd also recommend snapping up the .com/.net/.org while possible --Ape Agitator 23:53, 27 Sep 2005 (EDT)
  21. TVIV is certainly a workable name, though TVDB or VidB would be laudibly succinct alternatives. TVIV does have some additional benefits if you choose to continue with it. The double V could be turned a bit to look like the >> fastforward symbol known the world over (T>i>, TVi>>). TVIV could also take on a new meaning such as TeleVision InternetVision which would expand the purview into the logical extention of TV over digital networks (happening now). Also, a nice syllable ends the four letter sequence which lends itself to TVivid, TVivisect (okay, not so good), TViva or TVivacious. --DanP 15:41, 2 Oct 2005 (EDT)
  22. I didn't realize TV IV was a name of some forum (having never visited this forum). Knowing this I would prefer some type of change. Whether it's tvwiki or tvdb or whatever, I don't much care, but I do think it needs a change. --MateoP 15:53, 2 Oct 2005 (EDT)
    1. Why does the fact that it's also the name of a subforum on SomethingAwful matter? --IndieRockLance 21:25, 4 Oct 2005 (EDT)
  23. I whipped up a few ideas. They're just quick concept pencils off the top of my head. - rae 19:44, 4 Oct 2005 (EDT)
    1. I've always thought something like 1 or 8 would be best since it gets across the idea. It would just have to be cleaned up. --IndieRockLance 21:25, 4 Oct 2005 (EDT)
  24. Just so everyone knows, we are definitely sticking with The TV IV for the name. We welcome any logo designs anyone may come up with. --CygnusTM 22:22, 4 Oct 2005 (EDT)
