I submitted us to Fark and it was rejected. Feel free to discuss other places we can promote through. --CygnusTM 19:18, 14 Sep 2005 (EDT)

  1. As much as I want to say this is a bad idea, I think we have enough editors and account control (no open editing) to handle this. --Sigma 22:25, 3 Sep 2005 (PDT)
  2. I mentioned it on the forum once, and as much as I was half joking, I do think it is a good idea. Fark gets tons of hits every day, just on a quick look at the main page, the lowest number of comments on any article is 36, even those would be interesting to see. --Vlad 14:07, 7 Sep 2005 (PDT)
  3. I would personally be worried about not having enough super-editors just in case things get way out of hand. I may be underestimating the civility of Fark users, but I'm pretty sure that I'm not. --IndieRockLance 07:07, 8 Sep 2005 (PDT)
    1. If this site gets popular, we'll have the same problem anyway. Also since you have to sign up to edit/add pages, I think that is too much trouble for your average farker to go through in order to screw with the pages, and even then, I'm sure they could be banned. --Vlad 10:26, 9 Sep 2005 (PDT)
    2. This isn't too bad of an idea. Maybe as a precaution CygnusTM can post the link to Fark when a substantial amount of us would be willing to stay online for a while and delete/edit any spam, which I'm sure is bound to happen anyway, as Vlad mentioned. I'm actually surprised that no one from the forums has decided to crap this up yet, knowing how notorious GBS is for invading Wikipedia whenever a thread about it is posted. --Wizardryo 19:35, 9 Sep 2005 (PDT)
  4. I think this is a great idea, and I'm a big fan of wiki and people coming together to accomplish something big. I'm not a Fark user at all, I just really like this idea, and I miss the old TV Tome (where I would get episode lists from). I hope we get more users joining, there is so much work to do. --Randall 01:02, 12 Sep 2005 (EDT)
  5. If you really do this it probably would be sensible to create a community area like Wikipedia has not only to coordinate the users, but also give a possibility to report vandalism. This page also could be integrated. BTW maybe a submission to slashdot may be accepted, too. --RoToRa 06:47, 12 Sep 2005 (PDT)
    1. Do we want something like Wikipedia or should we just revive the phpBB forum? --CygnusTM 09:33, 12 Sep 2005 (PDT)
      1. I think we can capture a "community" just fine by mimicking something like the Village Pump section of Wikipedia, for example. I think it'd be a good idea not to splinter the community too much to other branches of the site. --Wizardryo 19:46, 12 Sep 2005 (EDT)
  6. Should we slashdot the site and let everyone know they can help if they want to, like RoToRa suggested? I think that would be an excellent idea. --Randall 09:52, 12 Sep 2005 (PDT)
    1. I submitted an article about the site to slashdot, and it's been accepted. So expect to be slashdotted sometime soon ;-) --Randall 23:03, 12 Sep 2005 (EDT)
    2. We've been slashdotted! --Randall 07:28, 13 Sep 2005 (EDT)
      1. I would have waited until the community area was set up, but it's seems to be working anyway. The site is still up, there is loads of editing going on and I haven't seen any vandalism yet. Maybe we can go for Fark in a few days :-) --RoToRa 10:14, 13 Sep 2005 (EDT)
      2. I was counting on the fact that people would care about it and want to help out, not vandalize. For now, it looks like because you have to register to edit, it is a good enough deterrent for potental vandals. :-) --Randall 14:25, 13 Sep 2005 (EDT)
      3. I'm glad really you decided to vote for the slashdotting. That's how I found the site and it's awesome!!! (My only complaint is that it could really use smarter templates, and would be cool if the outlines (e.g. show and episode page headers) got inserted automatically) --Kerecsen 00:23, 14 Sep 2005
        1. How would you propose "smarter templates"? A lot of the limitations, present and future, of wiki software is that the code is relatively hard to reconfigure to your own liking, so until a new version of MediaWiki is released that allows for more streamlining, we'll have to make do with this. --Wizardryo 02:44, 14 Sep 2005 (EDT)
          1. Have you seen my template propopsal above? (User:RoToRa/Template Suggestions) That could be a first step... --RoToRa 07:33, 14 Sep 2005 (EDT)
          2. I think (I've never actually done this with a wiki, but it works for greasemonkey) if you had templates for all elements such as RoToRa is proposing above, you could put in some XML identifiers into the resulting tags that would make the page semantically parseable. Then, if you added javascript snippets (through anoter template such as {{add_series_javascript}}) that iterated through the series entries and replaced uninitialized (red) links with function calls; you could put in these function calls code that creates and auto-populates the series entry (with information like the series title, next/previous episodes, main headersand probably some more stuff as well). It wouldn't do anything to keep the information consistent, but would speed up the initial flurry of data entry... If you want me to elaborate on this design, let me know... --Kerecsen 8:11am, 14 Sep 2005 (MST)
            1. I do know JS, XML and Greasemonkey, but To be honest, I don't quite understand, so please do elaborate. --RoToRa 15:37, 14 Sep 2005 (EDT)
            2. Maybe this is a bit clearer: Kerecsen/Proposal --Kerecsen 22:46, 14 Sep 2005 (MST)
            3. Clearer still: I've implemented the script. It seems to work just fine... See User:Kerecsen/Greasemonkey --Kerecsen 19:49, 17 Sep 2005 (MST)
        2. If we could add links to the top of the edit box to templates (like the bold, signature, etc. buttons), that would at least solve one of his complaints. --Fezz(Ryvius) 03:04, 14 Sep 2005 (EDT)
  7. Other places this might be submitted: metafilter, memepool, boingboing, plastic,kuro5hin. I'd wait until there's a community portal. Once that is set up and I've got some time I might write a story for K5. Jacoplane 11:42, 16 Sep 2005 (EDT)
