According to Jonathan Etter's book, Quinn Martin, Producer, producer John Wilder pitched the script to his old friend Dean Jones for the part of the killer. Jones turned it down, resulting in another unlikely performer, John Davidson, taking the role and receiving some of the best reviews of his career.
