The One: Making a Music Star was ABC's attempt to recreate some of the success found in American Idol. Previously they had done exactly this with their popular Dancing with the Stars program involving dancing, but The One took the singing of American Idol and also included aspects of other reality shows such as The Real World by including backstage events into the programming. However, the show was not a ripoff of American Idol because it was based on a previously existing product, Operación Triunfo from Spain.
