Plot Overview
Mary Richards says goodbye to a four-year romance and hello to a new career when she moves to Minneapolis and takes a job as an associate producer in the newsroom at WJM-TV, where she meets and befriends irascible news director Lou Grant, writer Murray Slaughter and pompous and buffoonish news anchor Ted Baxter, whose supper-hour newscast is the lowest-rated news show in the Minneapolis-St. Paul TV market due directly to his on-air dimwittedness. Mary also rents a new apartment in a large converted house from old friend Phyllis Lindstrom and becomes fast friends with apartment neighbor Rhoda Morgenstern, who rents the house's attic loft.
