The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power is based on the fantasy novels by J.R.R. Tolkien and a prequel to Tolkien's The Fellowship of the Ring.

Set in Middle Earth, the television adaptation explores new storylines preceding The Fellowship of the Ring. It's believed that there are some creative restrictions imposed by the rights holders on what can be done and what can't be done in a LOTR TV series.
