Plot Overview
Carol is away taking care of a sick aunt, leaving Mike and Alice to take care of a majority of the household tasks. The up-and-able number of household heads is reduced to one when Alice trips over a set of Chinese checkers that the younger kids had carelessly left on the living room floor. A visit to the doctor reveals that Alice had sprained her ankle, and she must stay off her feet while it heals.
Mike gathers the children and — after reminding them of a rule requiring them to put toys away when not being played with — asks them who is going to do such things as the cooking and the laundry? The kids get the hint and are pressed into service.
At first, things go horribly wrong. The boys can't clean and the girls are less-than-able cooks. They even quarrel when they get into each other's way. As that's all going on, Alice becomes depressed when she fears that her boyfriend, Sam, might be taking another female friend to his union's Meatcutter's Ball.
The kids realize that Alice isn't very happy these days and realize they need to cooperate and put forth their best effort to get things done. They do just that ... and sure enough, the meals improve, the laundry is cleaner, the beds are made right, the floors are vacuumed ... the house is spic-and-span, and a big smile creases Alice's face.
That smile gets even bigger when Sam stops by on the night of the Meatcutter's Ball. He's not dressed, which at first puzzles Alice, but then Sam explains that he didn't want to go without Alice. He spends the evening dancing with a bathrobe-and-pajama clad Alice, and all's well.
On the day Carol arrives home, the kids and Alice — her ankle healed — run out to greet her. Alice trips again ... this time, over her own vacuum!
