  • Maher Arar: Aram Al-Qir's case is effectively the one of Maher Arar. On September 26, 2002, Syrian-born Canadian citizen Maher Arar was detained during a stopover in New York by US immigration officials, who were acting on false information from the RCMP. He was then deported to Syria, where he was held in solitary confinement and subjected to torture until his release after a year. A public enquiry in Canada eventually cleared Arar of any terrorist activities.
