Plot Overview

Neil's awakened at 2 A.M. by an old friend, Maggie, who insists that, while driving slightly drunk on a foggy night, she rear-ended a parked car and found a dead woman in the front seat. He tells her to go home and forget about it, but is stunned to find out the next morning that she committed suicide by driving off a cliff. The car and the dead woman are missing, and the car's description matches that of a sports car stolen four days ago from a former General turned powerful industrialist. The body of a woman similar to the one Maggie claimed to have seen washes up on the beach, the victim of an accidental drowning. Neil suspects that the drowning victim was the General's mistress from when he resided in Houston, and that she showed up in L.A. prior to the General's marriage to a very rich woman. With these suspicions, Neil makes plans to travel to Houston to visit the General's ex-wife, who's suffered a breakdown and is in an institution there.
