Plot Overview
Barney stirs up a hornets' nest when he and Andy discover an apparently still open case file dating back to 1946. Back then, Floyd the barber and Mr. Foley the grocer got into a dispute at the barber shop and Floyd punched him in the nose. Andy asks Barney to forget about it but Barney, taking his job too seriously as usual, refuses to let the matter go and he re-opens the investigation anyway. It is discovered that Mr. Foley fell asleep in the barber chair and Floyd gave him a shave that he didn't ask for and subsequently refused to pay. This led to an escalation of heated words leading to the punch. Floyd disputes whether he asked for the shave but doesn't deny the punch.
Thanks to Barney overzealously pushing the issue, soon everybody in Mayberry starts taking sides and punching each other in the nose, forcing Andy to become uncharacteristically angry at Barney and telling him in no uncertain terms to stop. Barney is reluctant to drop the matter, but when Opie arrives at the courthouse after being sent home from school for fighting (stemming from the dispute between Floyd and Foley), Andy forces Barney to bring Floyd and Foley in and settle the issue once and for all, which they do when they shake hands. However, Barney is not satisfied with the resolution and he still refuses to drop the case as he storms over to the barber shop. Andy and Goober realize where Barney has headed and rush to the barber shop to stop him, only to see Barney return to the courthouse holding his nose, evidently getting punched there by Floyd to force him to drop the issue for good.
