Plot Overview
On the surface of a Dyson sphere aboard a crashed ship (the Jenolan) Geordi finds that Captain Montgomery Scott "Scotty" locked himself in a transporter feedback loop (for 75 years) in order to survive.
With his engineering knowledge 75 years out of date, Scotty finds that adapting to life in the 24th century is not going to be all that easy. Realizing this Scotty goes to Ten Forward to get a drink. He is aghast at the notion of synthahol. Eventually he obtains some real alcohol from Data and goes to the holodeck for a re-creation of the original Enterprise (his Enterprise).
Geordi and Scotty return to the Jenolan to download its computer's logs. When finished, they discover that they are stranded -- the Enterprise is no longer there. That's because the Enterprise has been dragged into the interior of the Dyson sphere.

Behind the Scenes
- In Scotty's holodeck re-creation of the original Enterprise, the command chair and helm console you see were fan Steve Horch's own personal re-constructions lent to the show for this episode only.
Allusions and References
- In Ten Forward when Data steps in and retrieves an unlabeled bottle of a green alcoholic beverage from Guinan's private stock, Scotty asks what it is. Data considers the question, ponders the bottle and the liquid inside, then finally says simply "it's green". That's all the description Scotty needs!
- This is a reference to the original series Star Trek episode "By Any Other Name" where Scotty has a similar conversation with Tomar.
