When the Enterprise becomes trapped in a spatial rift, the crew's behavior becomes increasingly erratic. While no one else aboard is able to enter REM sleep or dream, Deanna keeps having the same dream over and over again to the point of driving her mad.

Andrus Hagen is a Betazoid who has gone mad (become unresposnive) due to his extended time spent in the spatial rift. This is what is in store for Deanna, if they cannot leave the spatial rift.

It turns out that the dreams that Deanna is having are actually messages being sent by aliens who are also trapped in a complimentary, but separate part of the spatial rift. If only she knew what the message meant.
