The South African Broadcasting Corporation (SABC; in Afrikaans, Suid-Afrikaanse Uitsaaikorporasie, or SAUK) is the state-owned national broadcaster in South Africa.

Founded in 1936 by the South African government after it acquired the assets of the privately-owned African Broadcasting Company, the SABC operated only on radio until 1976, when it established its original television service, SABC TV (now called SABC 1), which originally aired only in the country's official languages of English and Afrikaans. Two other channels, TV2 and TV3, were established on January 1, 1982 to serve the country's other language groups. Following a 1996 reorganization, the three SABC TV channels received their current names and language assignments (see below).

The SABC runs 18 radio networks in a variety of languages, and three television networks in various languages. Upon the establishment of the television service, it was originally funded entirely through a television licence fee (as with the BBC in the United Kingdom), but since 1978, commercial advertising has supplemented the SABC's TV operations.

Television Channels

The SABC broadcasts the following TV channels in the following languages:

  • SABC 1 (English and Nguni)
  • SABC 2 (Sotho, Tswana, English and Afrikaans)
  • SABC 3 (English and Afrikaans)
