Season Nine of Soul Train premiered on September 15, 1979.
Beginning with Episode 319, Soul Train starts a new theme: A version of "Up on Soul Train" by the Waters, which will be remade in the 1980-1981 with the Whispers. The opening sequence of that same episode is the one that will be used for the next 2 seasons: The show opened with an a bright flash and the train is chugging toward the screen. Then the train chugs from behind the earth. Then, it chugs in a city and then toward the screen and turns right. Then the shot goes through a tunnel into space and it fades in to the studio.
