Season Eight of Soul Train premiered on August 19, 1978.
Starting with Episode 267, Soul Train has a new theme by The Hollywood Disco Jazz Band and The Waters. The new opening sequence is as follows: The Train comes from behind the Earth and chugs through the city and goes into a tunnel of starry space and fades into the studio with the dancers.
The set is the same as it was for the past two seasons, but starting with Episode 287, the set looks futuristic and has shapes around the stage. Don's podium is now a black sectioned wall with the animated train on it. This is the only season to have 40 episodes.
