SmurfsSeason Three

Baby's First Christmas is part of the twenty-sixth episode of the third season of Smurfs, and the eighty-eighth episode overall.

A Christmas-themed episode that aired 1-1/2 months before the holiday, this year's celebration is extra special as Baby is now part of the family. However, Chlohydrous plots to ruin the holiday by giving Mr. Nicholas the "kiss of hate." Will the Smurfs be able to convince Mr. Nicholas that he should make his deliveries after all, especially when they learn about a young boy and his single mother, who is very ill, and that they have nothing.

Plot Overview

Christmas at the Smurf Village has Papa Smurf announce that this year is very special because it is Baby Smurf's first Christmas. The other Smurfs vow to make this the best Christmas ever, with music, food, mistletoe and much more.

Others, however, are miserable this time of the year. Gargamel, as usual, is trying to get Mr. Nicholas to bring him a sack full of Smurfs (to eat and do other things, natch), but bemoans to Azrael that all his letters go unanswered. Elsewhere, Chlohydris from her observatory sees the happiness of shoppers and others engaged in seasonal goodwill and can't stand the sight and vows to destroy Christmas by giving Mr. Nicholas a special gift – the gift of hate, through a kiss of death.

In yet another part of the kingdom, a young boy named Eric is very sad, too. Only it's because his mother is very ill and she is unable to provide for her son a good Christmas, only able to give him a small piece of bread. Eric consoles his mother and assures her everything will be good. Eric writes to Mr. Nicolas, asking only for his mother to be well.

Meanwhile, Mr. Nicholas is organizing his annual deliveries and gets Eric's letter, and is very saddened. Just then, a visitor at Nicholas' door is a disguised Chlohydris, who claims she is a new neighbor coming to bring holiday cheer. Before he can call her on her ruse, she holds up a sprig of mistletoe (which has been cast by one of her hate spells) and kisses him. Mr. Nicholas then turns into an all around jerk, kicking a little puppy outside and declaring Christmas canceled. Chlohydris celebrates her success, certain that the children will be crying on Christmas morning because there are no gifts and that everyone is miserable.

Papa Smurf and the other Smurfs, meantime, visit Mr. Nicholas after witnessing Chlohyris' assault and immediately realize what they must do to save Christmas and not let her succeed. As the Smurfs hurriedly work to fulfill requests for all the children of the world, Mr. Nicholas wonders what is going on, then allows them to work under the condition that he no longer has anything to do with Christmas. Eventually, the Smurfs have to talk sense into Mr. Nicholas when he still won't get ready for his annual run and the reindeer won't go into flight without his command.

However, it is Eric's letter that starts to soften his heart ... and then Baby Smurf keeps tugging at his beard. Nicholas all of a sudden feels like his old self and is now more than ready to deliver on Christmas.

The next morning, Eric awakens to a full table of food, a Christmas tree and a little puppy all waiting for him. Even better ... there is a Christmas miracle: His mother is out of bed and walking, and is at full strength. Eric is so happy.

The next morning, Chlohydris is on her Christmas morning ride, envisioning a dark and sad Christmas, and is especially gleeful at the thought of Eric now having to say his goodbyes to his mother on a bitter day like this ...

... only to see Eric dancing around with his mother and full of joy and eating all the food and enjoying the puppy and so much more. Chlohyrdis is horrified and realizes that the Smurfs were probably instrumental in breaking her spell, and vows to get Mr. Nicholas one way or another.

Meanwhile, Gargamel awakens on Christmas morning and has nothing in his stockings. The only thing Mr. Nicholas left behind was a wind-up mouse, which delights Azrael!

Back in the Smurf Village, the Village Smurphony Orchestra plays while the Smurfs dance around the Christmas tree, happy that Baby Smurf's first Christmas has turned out to be (in Painter's words) magnifique. Handy, however, wonders how Nicholas' reindeer was able to fly, and all Papa Smurf could say is that it's something that will forever remain a mystery, as Baby Smurf giggles.
