Season Nine of Scrubs will premiere on December 1, 2009. The series will face a drastic shift due to the departure of Zach Braff at the end of season eight. The hospital has been relocated onto the campus of a medical school and only two of the original seven principle actors have committed to continuing their roles as regulars: Donald Faison and John C. McGinley. Early reports suggested that Neil Flynn would also resume his role until the pilot for The Middle was picked up by ABC, in which he stars opposite Patricia Heaton.

According to series creator Bill Lawrence Faison and McGinley will be joined by "a quartet of newbies (most of them playing students)" as full-time regulars, including Eliza Coupe, who guested as Denise Mahoney last season. Also among the new principles is Dave Franco, brother of James Franco. Most of the remaining original actors will make guest appearances on the show. Braff and Sarah Chalke have both agreed to appear in six episodes to help transition the series into the new status quo (both have appeared in promos for the first episode). Ken Jenkins is also expected to return. Judy Reyes, however, will not return, even in a guest capacity.
