Arnold Schwarzenegger is a movie star who dominated the box office in the late 1980s and early 1990s. He became a recurring impression for Darrell Hammond, who parodied the Austrian several times, particularly when Schwarzenegger became Governor of California.

Basic Information
Arnold Schwarzenegger began his career as an Austrian body builder and Mr. Universe. In the early 1980s, he moved into films, and with such action films as The Terminator, Total Recall and Terminator 2: Judgement Day and such comedies as Twins, Kindergarten Cop and Junior, he became one of the highest grossing stars of the era. Despite his success, his acting skills were never highly praised, and his thick Austrian accent, his thick muscular build and the formulaicism and extreme violence of his action films made him a popular target of impressionists and comedians.
That notwithstanding, Schwarzenegger was rarely directly parodied on SNL during his action star days. Rather, the most popular "impression" of him was a pair of completely different characters. Dana Carvey and Kevin Nealon's popular Hans & Franz were cousins of Schwarzenegger's who mimicked his accent and body building career.
However, when Darrell Hammond joined the cast of SNL, he included Schwarzenegger in his myriad of impressions. This impression became more popular in 2003, when Schwarzenegger ran for and won the governorship of California, at the time America's most populous state. Much of America considered this move from action film star to politician a bizarre one, and Hammond was able to gain a lot of mileage from impressions of the "Governator," as he was often called.

Trivia
- Although, as of the thirty-second season, Schwarzenegger has never hosted Saturday Night Live, he did appear as a special guest in the cold opening of episode 14x07, Danny DeVito/The Bangles. Schwarzenegger played himself in a Pumping Up with Hans & Franz sketch and gave the "Live from New York" line.
