  • Was well-known for writing a letter when she was 10 years old to Soviet Premier Yuri Andropov, who responded to her letter and invited her to visit the Soviet Union
  • Her mother, Jane worked as a social worker with the Maine Department of Human Services
  • Her father, Arthur taught literature & writing at the University of Maine at Augusta
  • Moved to Manchester, Maine after the second grade where she attended Manchester Elementary School
  • Became known as "America's Youngest Ambassador"
  • After Samantha's death, she was honored with the first prize of the Children's Peace Award and the Soviet Union issued a stamp & named a diamond, rose & mountain in her honor
  • A grade school in her hometown of Maine was named after her
  • Posthumously received the Peace Abbey Courage of Conscience Award in 2008
